Steps to Prevent Dengue

With the number of dengue cases rising, it is incredibly important to take care of ourselves and be mindful of the symptoms of dengue fever. Singaporeans have to be careful as we are not only battling COVID-19 but also dengue. This year’s dengue outbreak is expected to be the largest outbreak in Singapore’s history as cases already had an increase of 220 cases the previous week. With only 6 months into 2020, there are already 12,363 dengue cases reported. Aside from doing the Mozzie Wipeout, Singaporeans are encouraged to take extra measures to prevent further spread of dengue and to protect themselves.

  1. Avoid exposing skin as much as possible

During this outbreak, it is best to wear long-sleeve shirts and pants to cover your arms and legs from being exposed to mosquitoes. Even though you use mosquito repellent on your skin, it is better to cover it completely.

  1. Be sure to have mosquito repellent on hand

Since everyone has hand sanitizers in their bags now, be sure to also include a mosquito repellent. Mosquito repellents usually last for 3 – 4 hours and need to be reapplied. It is not enough to use it before you leave your house. It has to be reapplied throughout the day to protect you.

  1. Avoid going to infested areas

As much as possible, try to avoid going to any of the dengue clusters. You can check the clusters on NEA’s website, as well as any dengue updates. If you have to go to those areas for whatever reasons, be sure to wear long-sleeve shirts and pants and avoid going at dusk or dawn as that is when the mosquitoes are most active.

  1. Invest in a mosquito net

If you do not already own one, it is good to invest in a mosquito net especially if you have elderly or young ones at home. It can be used at night to prevent mosquitoes from going near you or your loved ones. This is especially good if you have people who are at risk of getting dengue; anyone with any sickness or have a weak immune system.

  1. Cover clothes with repellents

Sometimes wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants may not be enough. You can try to spray your clothes with repellents in order to deter mosquitoes away. This will protect you from being bitten.

Doing these steps can protect you and reduce the chances of you getting dengue. Everyone should do their part to reduce the further spreading of the dengue virus. It is important to be vigilant and do the Mozzie Wipeout diligently.  With our combined efforts, we can help make Singapore a safer place, free from dengue.
