Treat Sunburns Naturally With Lavender

We have all, at least once, experienced sunburn and all the pain that came along with it. It is not pretty, and it certainly does not feel good. Sunburns can range from mild to blistering, depending on your melanin production and duration of being exposed to the Sun. No matter how tempting it may be, you should never peel off the sunburnt skin!

WHY DOES IT HURT SO BAD?

Sunburn happens when the skin reacts to the UV (ultraviolet) radiation, which damages the skin’s outer layer. The core of the skin is melanin, which fights the UV rays and darkens the unprotected skin that is exposed to the Sun. This is why when you get sunburnt, your skin gets darker than usual. The skin cells become red and inflamed, resulting in a sunburn.

HOW TO TREAT IT

There are a lot of ways to treat sunburns, but the best way to do that is, of course, naturally. Use natural ointments or products to soothe the sunburn so that it will not hurt as much.

Lavender essential oils have a lot of benefits. One of them is to soothe sunburns. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, it can reduce the redness and swelling of sunburn, as well as speed up the healing process. It can heal the sunburn effectively due to its anti-microbial properties, and also promote new skin growth. The instant cooling sensation that Lavender essential oil provides also plays a part in soothing the inflammation.

HOW TO USE IT

Lavender essential oils can be used topically on the skin (yes, even sensitive skin!) to treat the sunburn. 2 -3 drops of it should do the trick for a small sunburn.

It can also be used with Aloe Vera, which has its healing and cooling properties, to work together and speed up the healing process. This is the best combination to intensively cool down and soothe the sunburn, which provides instant relief.

Additionally, you can dilute the Lavender essential oil with water and use it as a mist to spray onto your sunburn. This is best for a large area of sunburn as you can just spray it all over to provide an instant cooling sensation.

HOW TO PREVENT SUNBURN

Preventing sunburn is easy – simply make sure that you use sufficient sunscreen for your face and body. Sunscreen should be used all year round, regardless of whether you are indoor or outdoor. It will help shield your skin from the harmful UV rays and reduce your risk of getting skin cancer.

The more exposed you are to the Sun and the more sunburns you get, the higher your chances are of getting skin cancer.
